Here is a list of resources that we found to be invaluable on our journey over the past few years. We consistently further our personal and professional development through research, comparison and completion in additional courses and certifications. We also experiment with many different products to find what works and what has the best value. Below is a list of what has had the most influence on our success, helping to manage our autoimmune diseases, increase our energy and keep us looking and feeling younger.

We are both students first and share a passion for learning. We commit time to growing and learning each day.
Books have been an invaluable part of our success in dealing with our health issues and in personal development. Here are some of our favorites:
The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss
While some people are put off by the notion of completing things in 4-hours, this comes from a misunderstanding of Tim Ferriss’ work. Essentially, every subject he tackles is approached from a ‘minimum effective dose’ strategy. Ferriss deconstructs the things that will give us big results and strives to teach us how to get those results with the most strategic and timely methods possible. The 4-Hour Body is a jam-packed work filled with precision-filled clever ways to make your body more optimal. While there might be a lot of stuff in here that doesn’t interest you, you can skip over that and certainly find many things that do. You’d be hard pressed to walk away from this read without some powerful tools for positive change.
Beyond Training by Ben Greenfield
This is a book that breaks away from the conventional ideas of endurance exercise and nutrition and instead focuses on a more holistic approach to training. Ben Greenfield uses insightful, up-to-date, hacks that can be implemented in areas of fitness, recovery, nutrition, lifestyle and brain function. Even if you have no interest in triathlons and endless training, Ben offers lots of advice for living better for any walk of life.
Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter
Written by a renowned neurologist, Dr. David Perlmutter, Grain Brain discusses how inflammation is the cornerstone to all degenerative disease. In it, he details how diets high in carbohydrates, especially gluten and sugar, have a strong link to cognitive decline. His deep understanding of nutrition separates him from many other MDs and enables him to make prescriptions for better cognition without the use of drugs, thus improving brain health and protecting against dementia. If you want to think clearly for years to come, read this book.
The Motivation Manifesto by Brendon Burchard
This is the book for you if you want to propel your potential and live a fulfilling life. It’s full of motivation and mindset exercises to go beyond an ordinary life and go after an exceptional one. Brendon has a way of lifting the spirit and coaxing out your best self. Written with language and clarity that will inspire you to take action, The Motivation Manifesto is a powerful read that drives home the value of big goals, consistent effort and making a difference with your time.
The Paleo Project by Dr. Mark Bubbs ND
The Paleo Project uncovers how an ancestral approach to eating and moving can dramatically improve weight loss, recovery, performance and overall health. Dr. Bubbs has filled this book with actionable plans to regain your health and move towards optimal functioning. Whether you’re an athlete or not, this work provides insights to level up your health from managing health issues to the peaks of physical performance and body composition.
Clean, Green and Lean by Dr. Walter Crinnion
Dr. Walter Crinnion, N.D., discusses the toxic overload that we are facing in today’s world. This book is educational and practical, providing a good understanding of the toxins we face today and how to help decrease our toxic exposure. Crinnion uses clear science to highlight the effects of toxins and the value of being proactive in supporting the body’s detoxification processes.
We have been following the Paleo diet for around 3 years and we give it a lot of credit in reversing our autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
Bree experienced profoundly significant improvements when she committed to the Paleo diet. It also helped move our family to a whole food philosophy, which has changed the way we see and manage Ayla’s food allergies and how we eat each day.
ROBB WOLF, author of The Paleo Solution, is a former research biochemist and one of the world’s leading experts in Paleolithic nutrition. His website robbwolf.com is a wealth of information about the Paleo lifestyle, including exercise, disease management, strength and conditioning, and more.
MARK SISSON, a former elite endurance athlete has committed his life to healthy living. He is the author of the Primal Blueprint program and his blog, marksdailyapple.com, offers a well-balanced and extensive selection of wellness improvements. If you need any inspiration or reason for creating a better lifestyle, take a look at Mark’s philosophy.
We have both overcome autoimmune diseases naturally. If we had taken the advice of our allopathic doctors, we would be merely managing the symptoms through life-long regimes of medication with serious side effects. These were some of the resources we used:
The Paleo Approach written by Sarah Ballantyne, Ph.D., provides cutting-edge science that focuses on healing autoimmune diseases, naturally, through a modified Paleo diet called the Autoimmune Protocol.
The Paleo Approach Cookbook is full of recipes that follow her Autoimmune Protocol.
The Autoimmune Solution is an excellent resource for someone looking to reverse or prevent autoimmune diseases. Dr. Amy Myers is a leader in functional medicine and The Autoimmune Solution provides straight forward information and an easy-to-follow health protocol that empowers the reader to take action in managing their disease.
Dr. Tom O’Bryan is a functional medicine doctor who specializes in non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. If you are at all confused about gluten, then visit his website, www.theDr.com or better still educate yourself by listening to The Gluten Summit. The Gluten Summit is made up of 29 experts and opinion leaders from around the world who share groundbreaking research on the connection between gluten and today’s health issues. If you have an autoimmune disease, then this is a must listen.
We both love to move – whether it be lifting weights in the gym, performing a workout-of-the-day in a CrossFit box, stretching in a hot yoga class, or skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking or otherwise, playing in the beautiful outdoors. We’ve gained a deeper understanding of movement over the years that focuses on functional movement and is something that we practice as a whole family.
Ido Portal is the main inspiration for the Movement Culture group. His movement philosophy goes beyond the gym or an exercise class and truly enhances your life by freeing human mobility, strength, functionality and overall potential.
Rafe Kelley is a skilled movement coach with a background in martial arts, gymnastics, and parkour. His passions of movement, play and nature led him to create Evolve-Move-Play. His philosophy is simple, get out into nature, have fun, move like a human. He inspires by challenging us to move dynamically in natural ways in natural environments; over rocks, through water, and in the trees. Things we love to do!
Listening to podcasts is another inspiration to us. With the demands of being parents on top of everything else, our time is very valuable. We recently drove across Canada (from Toronto to Victoria which is approximately 5000 km/3000 miles). We tried to limit long days of driving but inevitably there were a few. Podcasts were our go-to for those long days in the car. Whether you utilize your driving time, walking the dog time, workout time, meal prep time or simply make the time, podcasts can accelerate your learning.

Supplementation is an important part in our healing and taking our energy, health and functioning to the next level. Although we believe that whole food should be the primary source of nutrients and minerals to the body, many times there is a deficiency that needs to be corrected with the use of supplements. Sourcing good quality supplements that are not jammed with fillers, tested thoroughly and are well-absorbed can be challenging. We recommend the companies above for professional grade supplements. You won’t find these brands on the shelf as they require qualified healthcare practioners to offer them in their practices.
*Contact us if you are interested in ordering supplements. We provide suggested combination stacks for specific purposes and have savings promotions. We can discuss these further through a FREE discovery session which you can sign up for on our coaching page.
